The president gathered his men and march north through Mountainroot Temple. The next room was larger than their keep back home. The eastern wall was partially destroyed and once again, the room was inhabited by more fey creatures.

Umberto ordered his troops to higher ground as he and Kregnok remained near the entrance to fend off attacks from that direction. Three rounds into the battle, the far northern doors burst open and in stormed seven trolls and a firebelcher.

While the hearts of the heroes sank, they were rejuvenated by the site of the fey also expressing fear at the site of the regenerating monsters. Quickly a three front war was on in the temple. Umberto pulled off his most impressive political maneuver; convincing two of the quickling runners to cease attacking the heroes, and instead turn their attentions solely on the trolls.

The battle raged on for seemingly hours, the two-headed troll was dropped for good, and the president of Rock Hammer was dropped for a number of rounds. Eventually the heroes stood triumphantly at the top of the room, victorious once again.

From here they headed north to another massive room, the reliquary.

“You are in a wide corridor. Ahead of you, two flights of stairs, separated by a long landing, lead to a platform high above. Two figures stand atop that platform, apparently conversing. One is a rust-hued dragonbord clad in heavy armor. The other is a slender figure, its features hidden by a hooded cloak. He is clad in a sort of leather-and-steel harness. It looks less like armor than like the creation of a maddened surgeon – a full-bodysuit version of a brace designed to hold a broken limb in place.”

“You see them only for a split second, for before the door has even fully opened, both have stepped away from the edge and out of sight. You quickly move up the first flight of stairs to the platform. You see four stone stairs come together here, forming a small platform 20 feet above a larger, circular surface. That surface appears to be made of glass or crystal, allowing a full view of the various chambers below. Some of those chambers extend out from beneath the crystal – open-roofed so that you can still see in. The stairs to the north rise upward, rather than down, culminating in a large set of double doors several dozen feet above your current level, and a pair of massive statues of Moradin stand in the northwest and northeast corners. To the southwest stand a pair of small buildings – the only structures in the entire cavern that appear to have a roof.”

“An array of humanoid creatures stands scattered about the chamber, both on the platform or stairs, and down on the ground level. Not a one of them looks especially thrilled to see you.”

The heroes charged to the crystal platform and engaged the enemies. The Eidolon seemed really out of place, fighting alongside trolls, mercs, and dragonborn. More and more attackers reached the platform, but the heroes remained vigilant and eventually prevailed when the eidolon shut down.

Grognak led the group over to the two somewhat strange buildings on the corner of this massive chamber. Kregnok noted that these were recent constructions and didn’t quite go with the rest of the masonry in the temple. Inside they found a bound and tortured azer, a dwarf looking man with flames for his beard and hair. It turns out this azer is the Caretaker of Mountainroot Temple and he had been tortured by General Zithiruun in hopes that he would open up the portals in Mountainroot so that his forces could attack Overlook from outside and within.

Before the heroes left the temple and teleported back to the Stone Anvil in Overlook, the Caretaker asked them to assist him in a ritual to reconsecrate the temple. The heroes, even the former priest of Moradin, was happy to help.

As soon as the heroes appeared back in Overlook they were quickly whisked away to the Council of Elders. At the High Hall, Great Elder Morgoff Stonefist asked the group to join them on the dais. Here the heroes quickly retold the story of what was happening.

Stunned at the news the heroes and the members of the Great Council adjourned to the War Room to make preparations for the impending attack. Once that was wrapped up, Great Elder Morgoff asked the heroes to remain in Caer Overlook and assist over the next couple of days if they could.
